Chapter 4: Rain on the Windshield

The clerk at the county office had been no help at all.

"That file was pulled last month," she told us, tapping her keyboard. "Mr. Cobb's office signed for it."

"Which Mr. Cobb?" I asked.

"The tall one with the watch."

Colton went very quiet beside me.

I didn't say a word until we were back in my car.

"Your vice-chair pulled the original in September," I said. "He told you he found it by accident."

"He did."

"Accidents don't sign for files."

Colton looked out at the parking lot.

Then the sky opened.

It came down so hard that the windshield went white and the wipers stopped helping.

I drove with both hands on the wheel, out onto Route 40, and the road turned into a river.

"Pull over," Colton said.

"There's no shoulder."

"Then slow down."

"I am slow. This is slow."

Ahead of us, a delivery truck had stopped under the overpass with its flashers on.

I eased in behind it, shut off the engine, and the rain filled the car with noise.

We sat there with our breath loud in the small space.

"We'll wait it out," I said.

"Fine."

He shifted in the seat, which made my little car seem even smaller.

His shoulder was against mine.

It was warm through two layers of wool and I could feel his pulse in it.

"You were good last night," he said.

"I was accurate."

"You made Valerie lose her place and you did it with a water glass in your hand."

"Is that a compliment, Mr. Thayne?"

"Colton." His voice was lower now. "And yes."

I turned my head.

He was looking at my mouth.

He wasn't hiding it, and neither of us said anything for a long moment.

"You're my client," I said.

"I know."

"You're engaged to be engaged."
