Chapter 16: The Salon Chair
Winona's POV
By Friday noon the whole town knew what Stefan had said in the library.
I knew it was the whole town because the pharmacy line spent the morning looking at me and saying nothing.
I knew something else because Maxine called me on my break.
"Mom, the young guy from Dad's crew just texted me," she said.
"Which one?"
"The one who said sorry to you at the shop. Dad lost the Dayton Road apartments."
I put down my pen.
Those apartments were Blaine's biggest account.
They were four buildings with forty units each, and he had serviced every furnace in them for nine years.
"The property manager was at the board meeting," Maxine said. "Her sister's in the booster club."
"What did she say?"
"That she doesn't give a contract to a man who puts another girl's name on his chest while his own daughter stands there. And three guys quit this morning."
"Which three?"
"All the old ones. They're going to work for the other shop in Bryan."
I thanked her and hung up.
I did not feel glad, and that surprised me a little.
I felt something steadier.
It was a number on a page that had finally come out right.
At lunch I drove to Leah's salon.
It sat on Main Street between the bank and a shop that sold quilting fabric, with a pink awning and a hand-lettered sign in the window.
Inside it smelled of hairspray and coffee.
Four women sat under the dryers, and two more waited in the chairs by the door.
