Chapter 4: One Dance

I walked out of the sunroom with my head up and made it as far as the middle of the lawn before my knees went.

My friend from the museum caught me.

"Breathe," she said. "You were incredible. I got every second of it."

"I just threw my ring in a cake."

"You threw it in a *lemon* cake," she said. "It's practically a public service."

I laughed once, and it came out wet.

Behind us, the guests were talking in low voices again.

The sun was going down behind the cliff, and the servants were lighting lanterns along the tents.

Genevieve crossed the grass toward me with her daughter by the hand.

Her eyes were red, and she had the look of someone who has been wronged and is trying to be brave.

"Rosalind, please," she said, loud enough for the nearest tent to hear. "You've made Alaric look like a monster. The little one is in tears. Can we at least talk like adults?"

The girl was not in tears.

She was holding a lemon cookie and watching the lanterns.

"I'll talk," I said. "But let's do it here, where everyone can hear."

I turned to the nearest tent.

"Show of hands. Who here got an invitation to this party from me?"

My friend raised her hand, and so did the woman who had run the caterers.

Nobody else did.

"Who got one from Alaric?"

Forty hands went up.

"Then take your daughter home, Genevieve," I said. "She's too young to be at a party where the guest of honor wasn't asked."

Genevieve's face crumpled.

She turned to the crowd, expecting help, and nobody came forward.
