Chapter 19: Terms

Lena sat at the end of a row of gate chairs at O'Hare with one white suitcase beside her.

Her curls were pinned again, her lipstick was fresh, and her silver case lay shut on her knee.

Tom had driven behind me the whole way in a rented sedan, and he stood ten feet back with his hands in his pockets.

Emil had stayed in the city.

I had asked him to, and I hadn't needed to say why.

"Hello, Dara," Lena said.

"You wanted a word."

"I want a trade." She patted the empty seat beside her. "Sit."

"No."

"Then stand, and I'll talk up at you."

She smiled, and her voice dropped into the old lullaby.

"I'll give you the ring, right now, in your hand."

"In return, you write a letter to the state's attorney saying you've no wish to press charges."

"I'd say that would be the kindest thing you ever did."

"Kind," I said.

"We were friends, once."

"You were at my wedding. You stood three rows behind the bridesmaids and held a handkerchief."

"I cried," said Lena.
