Chapter 22: The Last Request
I didn't answer him that night.
I fell asleep with my hand on his chest and my answer unspoken, and the rain stopped around four.
At six-fifteen I woke to a car engine under the window.
It was not Emil's truck.
It was a sedan with a loose belt, and the driver did not know how to be quiet on gravel.
I went to the window in Emil's flannel shirt.
Tom's car sat at the curb in front of the diner with its lights off.
He got out, slowly, and stood beside the door.
He wore a canvas work jacket with a Kellerman Freight patch on the chest and a hard hat clipped to his belt.
He had come straight from the yard in Gary.
His hands were scraped red across the knuckles.
Emil was already at the bottom of the stairs, in his jeans and no shirt.
"Stay up there," he said.
"Emil."
"I mean it. I'll tell him to go."
He opened the front door of the clinic and walked into the middle of the road.
He didn't raise a hand or a voice.
He simply stood there on the wet asphalt with his arms hanging, a tall white-haired man in the way.
