Chapter 10: No Bond, No Mark

Wynne slept at Saltmarsh that night and the next, in a whitewashed room above the harbour with a window on the bay.

Nobody had asked her to leave Ashfall.

Nobody had needed to.

She had walked out of the Stone Hall with Hester behind her and a bag over her shoulder, and she had not looked at Garrick on the floor.

Bram's ferry had been waiting at the jetty.

He had not asked her anything on the crossing.

On the third morning he knocked on her door with a tray.

"Hester says the leg wants looking at," he said. "She also says I'm to do it, because she has a patient in the village and doesn't trust my cook."

"I'm healed."

"I know. I'd like to see it anyway."

She sat on the edge of the bed and pulled up the hem of her trousers.

There was no cast and no cut.

There was only a thin white line across the calf where the silver had gone in, already fading.

Bram knelt on the floorboards and took her ankle in both hands.

His palms were warm and calloused, and his thumbs moved over the scar very lightly.

She felt it all the way up to her knee.

"Does this hurt?"

"No."

"This?"

"No."

He pressed lower, along the bone, and a shiver went through her that had nothing to do with pain.

He looked up.

His eyes were green and level, and for the length of that look neither of them moved.

"It's healed," he said, and his voice came out rougher than before.

"I told you."

"You did."

He did not let go.
