Chapter 13: Worn Soft
Two guards brought Calla back down the dune path within a quarter of an hour.
She still had the shawl over her hair, and her eyes were already wet.
"Garrick," she said, and ran across the sand to him.
The oldest elder stepped into her way.
"Calla Greaves, three years ago you took the Luna Codex out of the archive," he said. "Did you read it?"
"I borrowed it to learn a Luna's duties."
"Did you read the pages on the Tennant bond?"
"I never got past the rites."
Hester held the book open on her palm.
"These are the only pages in it worn soft from thumbing," she said. "I'd call that getting past the rites."
"Everyone who touched it would have worn them."
"Nobody signed it out in the thirty years before you. The slip above yours is that old."
Calla's chin shook.
She looked at the ring of faces, and found nothing kind in any of them.
So she turned on Wynne.
"She could have stopped giving him her strength any day," Calla said. "She waited for the new moon, in front of the whole pack, so he'd fall where everyone could see."
"The bond was mine to cut," Wynne said.
"You knew what it would do to him."
"I found out an hour ago."
"Did you?"
Calla said it softly, and then louder, to Garrick.
"Did you hear her? Eight years she held your life in her hand, and she let you go out against that man with nothing."
Garrick had got himself onto one knee.
He looked at Wynne, and she watched him weigh two stories.
