Chapter 12: The Tub
The tub was big enough for two, and Jubal had put three people in it.
It stood on four iron claws in the middle of his bathroom, with a dripping brass tap and a window over it that looked out on the Jasper square.
The water was as hot as we could stand.
I sat between the two of them with my back against Tobe's chest, and Jubal faced us with his knees drawn up and his hair dripping.
Nobody had spoken for a while.
My whole body ached in a deep, easy, well-used way, and my skin smelled of the lavender soap Jubal kept for scrubbing his hands.
"This is the best idea you have ever had," I said.
"I have a lot of ideas," said Jubal.
"This is the best."
"The lamb thought so too."
Tobe's chin rested on the top of my head, and his arms lay loose around my ribs.
His big thumb was moving back and forth, slowly, on my hip.
"You said nothing named," he said, into my hair. "Back in the cabin."
"I know what I said," I told him.
"You said it again at my grandmother's," Tobe said. "About three times."
"Tobe Yocum, are you throwing my own rule back at me?"
"I'm noting," Tobe said. "For the record."
Jubal began to laugh, and then I did, and the water slopped over the rim of the tub.
"Mine," I said, and turned my head to look up at Tobe. "Mine. There. Name it. What are you going to do about it?"
His eyes went dark.
"Say it again," Tobe said.
"Mine," I said.
He kissed me, upside down and slow, with his wet hand coming up to cup my jaw.
Across from us, Jubal had stopped laughing.
