The dogwoods came out on the first Saturday of April, and the whole Boxley meadow turned white under them.
I stood at the top of the grass in my mother's dress.
It was ivory cotton with a high waist and long sleeves, and I had let it out at the seams myself, with her thread.
The Chain lay on my collarbone.
Nine women of the quilt circle had woven white blossoms through my braid, and they had argued the whole time about how.
A hundred and fifty wolves sat in the new grass on quilts and tailgates, with their children running between them.
Granny Yocum sat in the front chair with her cane across her knees, in a purple hat.
I walked down the long slope to the old oak, where the midwife stood waiting, with Tobe on one side and Jubal on the other.
Tobe wore a clean white shirt buttoned to the neck, and he stood stiff and red-eared in front of a hundred and fifty people.
Jubal had left his cuffs undone and rolled to the elbow.
He had been grinning since daylight, and he had not been able to stop.
"We are here for a thing the Boxley pack forgot," the midwife said, to the whole meadow, "and the Jacks Fork remembered."
"A she-wolf's bite is the only mating there is," said the midwife.
