Chapter 24: Three Chairs
Six little girls had worn the Chain for a minute each and handed it back.
By ten o'clock that night the Cantrell house was ours.
I had aired my father's big bedroom and painted it yellow in March.
The bed in it was wide and old, with a headboard of black walnut, and a tall mirror stood on the dresser.
I stood in front of the mirror in my mother's slip with my hair down, and two men stood behind me.
"There's three of us in that glass," Jubal said, "and I think I'm the best looking."
"You're second," said Tobe.
"Second to whom?"
"Her."
"Fair," said Jubal.
I laughed, and I met my own eyes in the mirror, and they were bright.
I wore two iron rings on my left hand and the pearl on my throat, and nothing else Tobe was going to let me keep.
His hands slid up my sides and drew the slip over my head.
It fell on the floor with a small sigh.
"Look," Tobe said, into my ear. "I want you to look."
I looked.
I saw my own body, strong across the shoulders, with the forge scar on my wrist and the long braid down my back.
I saw his big dark hands spread on my stomach.
Jubal knelt in front of me and put his mouth against my belly.
His red head bent in the glass, and I watched his lips move down to the place where my thighs began.
"Open for me," he said.
I set my feet apart on the wooden floor.
He licked me slowly, in the mirror, in the lamplight.
I watched his tongue move on me and my own face go soft and helpless above it.
"Oh," I said. "Oh. I look happy."
"You are happy," said Tobe.
"I know I am. I can see it."
He reached around me and cupped my breasts and rolled my nipples between his fingers, and Jubal's tongue found a pace and stayed there.
My knees began to shake.
"Hold her up," Jubal said, against me. "She's going."
Tobe took my weight against his chest and wrapped one arm across my waist.
I watched myself come apart in the mirror, my mouth open and my head thrown back on his shoulder.
My hand reached down to fist in Jubal's hair.
