Chapter 13: The Writ
I dressed in four minutes, with Caleb buttoning his shirt behind me.
The bite on my shoulder pulled when I raised my arms, and I was glad of it.
"Don't let them see the mark," he said.
"They'll see it. I'm done hiding things in this house."
I put on my plain grey wool and pinned my hair, and I opened the door.
The captain of the riders was a tall man with a scroll in a green leather tube.
He read it standing in my doorway, in the loud flat voice of a man who is paid to be heard in corridors.
Rosalind Ferris, Luna of Stonecrown, was found unfit to hold the Luna's seal, by reason of the old silver wound in her lung and the weakness it caused.
She was to be held at the Crown infirmary until the king returned from the northern line in six days.
"Who petitioned?" I said.
"Next of kin, my lady. Madam Runciman, and Miss Ansley Ferris."
Behind me Caleb made a low sound.
"Three elders of the Royal Council signed it," the captain went on. "The king's own seal is not required for a hold of six days."
"And my signature?"
"Not required either."
I took the scroll from him and read it myself.
My mother-in-law's name was there, in the hand that had signed my household accounts for six years, and under it my sister's round, careful script.
She had even dotted the i.
"I'll come," I said. "I only want a moment to put my papers in order."
"You are not to take papers."
"Then I'll leave them with my assistant, in front of you."
Keely was already at my elbow with the black case held against her ribs.
She looked at the captain, and she looked at me, and she stepped back into the room and sat down on top of it.
