Chapter 17: Orrin's Offer
Orrin drew a folded paper from his coat and snapped it open in the firelight.
"A deed," he said, "drawn eight years ago and signed by the Alpha of the Blackfir."
"It gives the Halvorsen stand to the pack's treasurer, to dispose of as he sees fit."
"That's me. And I see fit to sell it."
Five packs crowded close.
Soren stepped up beside me, and his voice came out flat and level.
"I signed an exile order," he said. "I never signed that."
"Then your hand is very like it," Orrin said, almost kindly.
"The girl is a squatter on the pack's land, and her seat is a trick of the moon."
"Your Alpha," he told the north fork man, "has yielded to a woman with no bond."
"Keep the cedar and keep your money."
"When the Blackfir throw her out, you'll have the best timber in the Cascades."
The north fork Alpha looked at the satchel on the log.
His eyes moved from the money to the paper to my face.
"You told me she'd fail the Run," he said slowly.
"A runner can fail. A deed doesn't."
"That's not a deed," I said.
"Prove it, girl," said Orrin, with the old smile.
