Chapter 23: What the Pack Wants
Sigrid Brekke gave the Stone away at noon on Thursday, on a folding chair, with a thermos of coffee.
Dell sat across from her on an upturned bucket.
The Keeper's book lay between them on a flat rock, its cover scorched brown along one edge.
"Me," Dell said.
"You."
"I own a bar. I can't keep a Stone. I put a moose head over the pool table and called it a Council."
"A keeper keeps what people can't say," Sigrid said. "You wrote a letter every month for eight years and never posted one."
"That's not a skill, that's a disorder."
"It's the skill."
Dell opened her mouth, and for once nothing came out of it.
Sigrid tapped the book.
"Every Sitting is in there," she said. "Every vow made at this Stone, and who made it, and who broke it."
"My hands shake now, and the moss is gone. It wants someone who will write the truth even when it costs her a customer."
"I'd lose a few," Dell said slowly.
"You'd lose Orrin's cronies. I'd call it a bargain."
Dell wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist and picked up the book in both hands.
