Chapter 9: Quorum
At sunrise the Council sat behind the long table in the pack hall, five chairs in a row.
Orrin Dahl sat in the middle.
Sigrid Brekke sat at the end with the gray flannel bundle in her lap and her cane across her knees.
The hall was full again.
I stood at the back with Dell, with my hands in my pockets and Soren's scent still on my skin.
He stood alone in the open space before the table.
He had not slept, and he held himself.
"I move," said Orrin, "that this Council find the Alpha compromised in the matter of the Halvorsen woman."
"And remove him from the seat."
"Second," said the miller, on his left.
"Discussion," Sigrid said, in a voice like a door closing. "Jorgen Dahl is first."
Jorgen came up the aisle.
His father didn't look at him.
"Say it," said Sigrid.
He said it plainly, standing very straight, in front of the pack that had grown up with him.
He told them the date, the hour, and the wrench.
When he finished, the hall was so quiet I could hear the clock.
