Chapter 10: Over Soup
Nahia's POV
I let him hold me until the lamp guttered.
Then I pushed on his chest, and he lifted his head, and I saw his face.
"Tell me about the supper," I said.
He did not ask how I knew there was a supper.
He stepped back, tucked himself away, and pulled his trousers up.
He did it slowly.
The broth was still dripping off the table onto the stone.
"In January," Unai said, "my uncle came to eat with me on a Thursday."
"Go on," I said.
"He talked about smugglers. A hut above the border, on the Roncal side, with guns in it."
"And?" I said.
"He said the wardens could clear it in an afternoon."
"And you said?"
He looked at me.
"I said, Do it," Unai said.
I had known it for a week.
I had known it since the morning I walked across the pasture with a dead man's bell.
I had told myself that when I heard it, I would be calm.
"Say it again," I said.
"I said, Do it."
"With your mouth full?"
"With my mouth full," he said.
"Did you ask who lived there?" I said.
"No," he said.
"Did you ask what the guns were?"
"No," he said.
"Did you ask the name of the man you were sending thirty men to burn?" I said.
"No," he said.
His voice was perfectly steady.
"I did not ask one question, Nahia. I passed him the bread."
I picked up the bowl off the floor and set it on the table.
Then I picked it up again, and threw it at the wall.
It broke.
He did not flinch.
"His name was Txomin Etxart," I said. "He was seventy-four."
My voice shook, and I let it.
"He took in a girl on the first night she came over your stone with her hair cut off. He gave her his bed and slept in the goat pen for a week."
"Nahia-" he said.
