Chapter 19: No Again
We reached the border stone an hour before light, with snow coming down in small dry flakes.
Six men in green jackets stood across the pass with their staves crossed.
They were the Bell-keeper's own house wardens, big men from the lower farm, and I did not know one of their faces.
Over the stone, on the Roncal side, a long dark line of people stood in the trees with their bells wrapped in sacking.
Twenty-nine of them, waiting to walk home.
Unai stopped short of the staves.
"Whose order?" he said.
"The Bell-keeper's, Alpha," the tallest of the six said. "No one crosses the stone from the Roncal side before the Batzar has sat."
"The Batzar sits at noon."
"Then they cross at noon."
"They cross at dawn," Unai said.
"That is when the law says a trespasser may walk into the Candlemas Batzar. The Bell-keeper knows the law better than I do."
"He said to hold the stone."
"Then hold it," Unai said.
He turned to me.
"Go back to the tower," he said, very low. "This will not be pleasant. If it comes to staves I want you out of reach."
