Chapter 23: Spring
Nahia's POV
The black wolf ran ahead of me up the beech slope with his tongue out and his ears flat.
I ran after him on four legs, and I was laughing.
It is a hard thing to explain, laughing as a wolf.
It comes out through the whole body.
I was grey-brown and long in the leg, and the April grass was wet under my paws.
For the first time since January my wolf and I were one animal and not two.
She had waited five years for this.
He circled back and shouldered into me, and I snapped at his ear.
He bounded away and I went after him, over a stream and through a thicket of last year's bracken.
I caught him on the open slope.
I hit him in the flank with my shoulder and he rolled, and I stood over him with my teeth bared and my tail high.
He lay on his back in the new grass and let me.
His black eyes were soft, and wide, and wet.
I put my nose against his throat.
He licked the long scar down the side of my muzzle, where the burn lay on my other shape.
I understood that he saw it on both of me.
Then he was up and off, and I was after him again.
We climbed onto the bare grey shoulder of the mountain where the sun had been all morning.
A flat rock lay there, wide enough for a bed, warm from a morning of sun.
I stopped on it, panting, and shifted.
It did not hurt, and it was not frightening.
The weight I had carried since January was gone, and I had not known how heavy it was.
I lay on my back on the sun-warmed stone, naked, with my cropped hair tickling my ears, and the light red through my eyelids.
Grass rustled.
I heard a man's breathing, and bare feet, and then nothing.
