Chapter 16: The Healer's Oath
The Moon Council sat at noon in the Elder's stone hall.
Four old wolves took the high bench, and the Elder sat in the middle with her silver seal on a chain at her neck.
The pack filled every bench behind us, and the doors stood open so those outside could hear.
Gideon stood at the left rail with Toby at his shoulder.
I sat on the right, between Bess and an empty chair.
Bess had not asked to come. She had put on her good coat and sat down beside me.
"Delaney Pruitt," the Elder said. "You have the floor."
Delaney rose in a plain grey dress with her hair pinned back.
She had washed her face. She looked young and wronged, and for a moment I almost saw what Gideon had seen for six years.
"I will be brief," she said. "I loved this pack's Alpha like a brother. I served his house when his own Luna would not."
A few people shifted on the benches.
"Now I am accused of poisoning the Luna. By whom? By a woman who left her mate in the night, with a ticket and a lie."
"What lie?" the Elder said.
"That she carries his child."
The hall went silent.
I felt Gideon go rigid across the aisle.
"Maeve Calder is not pregnant," Delaney said gently. "No one has seen her swell. No one has seen a healer's mark. She told her mate she was carrying a pup so he would chase her, and he fell for it on his knees in the road."
She turned to the pack.
"She is grieving, and she is cruel with it. I forgive her. But she made up a child to break a good man."
