Chapter 22: The Union
They met at the creek on the morning after the Naming Moon, where the old border ran.
Stonehollow stood on the south bank, and Ashfall stood on the north.
A flat gray stone sat in the middle of the water, wide enough for one wolf.
Kellan had explained the rule the night before.
Whoever wished to be one pack stepped into the creek and stood on the stone.
Whoever didn't stayed on the bank.
No speeches, no Council, no petitions.
Just feet, in front of everyone.
"You want to count them," I asked, "like they're votes?"
"I want them to count themselves."
The old man with the cane was first to speak, though.
He pushed through to the front on the north bank, with his chin up, and the whole yard went still.
"I have buried two sons on that road," he said. "Both killed by a Stonehollow patrol. I was told it was a mistake. I was told that thirty years running."
He pointed his cane across the water.
"I'll hear it from the Stonehollow Alpha, to his face. Why should I stand on a rock with them?"
The young Alpha took a breath.
He was twenty-four and he looked it, and he did not look away.
"My father led one of those patrols," he said. "I found his orders when I took the stone. They said to shoot any Ashfall wolf on the road at dawn. They didn't say to ask."
A rustle went through Stonehollow.
"The man who gave those orders was Dorian's father," the young Alpha said. "He's dead. I'm not him. I can't give you your sons, sir. I can only keep it from happening to anyone else's."
