Chapter 8: Mate-Right

Three Alphas of the Council sat on the dais at sunrise, and I was carried in to face them.

The great hall was packed to the doors with Blood Moon wolves and a hundred of Merrick's.

Caius carried me himself and set me in a chair at the foot of the dais.

He did not leave my side.

The Alpha in the middle was a woman with white braids and a hard, lined face.

"Merrick Ashdown of Thornfield brings a charge," she said. "That the woman Lark Ellery drew the blood of an Alpha. The penalty is death, or silence for life."

"She is already silent," Caius said.

A few of his wolves growled, and the woman lifted a hand.

Merrick stepped out in his grey cloak, closed to the throat.

He bowed to the Council, then to me.

His face was full of sorrow.

"I speak as her father," he said. "She is unwell. Her fits are why I sent her to a strong pack. My daughter Edda will say the same."

They brought Edda in from the east tower.

She wore the blue dress again, and she was crying already.

"My sister broke her own legs in a fall," she said, in a voice that shook. "She bit her tongue through."

I stood up on my crutches.

Bryony had made them overnight, with cloth around the grips, and my arms trembled holding me.

Caius reached for me and stopped.

I shook my head, and I went forward two steps by myself.

The Council watched me come.

I stopped in front of the white-braided woman, and I opened my mouth wide, and I tilted my face toward the window light.

The hall went quiet.

I heard someone gasp near the back.
