Chapter 15: Dahl's Last Letter
I came down the loft ladder in Lorcan's flannel with my torn dress belted shut underneath it.
The yard was full of wolves.
They had come out of the hall with their coffee cups.
They stood in a ring in the snow, thirty people with their breath steaming.
A white pickup idled in the middle of them.
A man in a Dahl Timber jacket stood by the hood with an envelope in his hand.
In the passenger seat, behind the glass, sat Cyrus Dahl himself.
He had come to watch.
I walked up to the foreman and held out my hand.
"I'm the Steward," I said.
He put the envelope in it as if it were hot.
I opened it right there, with thirty people watching and flakes of snow landing on the paper.
It was one page.
It said that Dahl Timber held a signed option to buy the Hollowtree land.
The price was one dollar an acre, effective when the lease lapsed.
At the bottom was a signature in blue ink, and a notary stamp.
I read the signature once.
Then I read the date next to it, and I read it again, because I read everything twice.
"Bess," I said. "What day did Hobart Lund die?"
"October third."
"Mr. Dahl," I said, loud enough to carry through the glass. "Come out and hear this. It concerns you."
The truck door opened.
Dahl climbed down, thick and red in his canvas jacket, and stood beside the foreman with his jaw out.
"I'll read it for the record," I said.
"This option is signed Hobart Lund, as Steward of the Hollowtree Trust."
