Chapter 24: Her Terms
The ring was a thin gold band with a small green stone, and it had been Hobart's mother's.
Lorcan held the box up in both hands, kneeling on the floorboards in his flannel shirt, and his hands were not steady.
"I want to ask you in words," he said. "Not in a clause."
"Ask."
"Will you marry me, Tilda Quarles?"
I looked at the ring, and at the man, and at the green lamp and the black pen on the blotter.
"Yes," I said.
It was an easy word now, and the only witness was Hobart's empty chair.
He slid the ring onto my finger.
It fit, and he stared at it, and then he put his forehead against my knee and breathed.
I stroked his hair for a long minute.
"Get up," I said. "Please."
He rose.
"Take me upstairs," I said. "I'm not finished with the coat."
He lifted me off the desk and carried me up the stairs, and the whole pack, I was certain, could hear us laughing.
The bedroom was gold with the late morning sun.
He laid me on the quilt and slid the coat off my arms.
He folded it over the chair, which seemed to me the most romantic thing a man had ever done with a coat.
