Chapter 10: The Choice
Isla's POV
On the fifth night, Torin came to the lake at two in the morning, and he did not walk up to the porch.
He stood on the stones at the water's edge with his hands hanging, and waited for me to notice.
I had been awake anyway.
I put on my mother's cardigan and went down to him.
Between us the moon lay across the black water, and the cold was hard enough to hurt my teeth.
"Rule three," he said. His voice was ragged. "You said if you asked me a question, I answer it."
"I haven't asked one."
"Ask me why my father followed me to your door."
I looked at him.
"Why did your father follow you to my door?"
"Because he's afraid of you," Torin said. "He's been afraid of you for two years, and I never saw it. I thought he was only cold with you. He's been afraid you would do exactly what you did."
"What did I do?"
"You said I accept it, and you meant it."
The lake lapped on the shingle.
"He told me what you are," Torin said. "He says a white wolf is never fated. He says she chooses. He says that's why my wolf has only ever been calm when you touch me, since the night of your twenty-fourth birthday."
I said nothing.
"He says when she takes it back, it goes with her." His mouth twisted. "He says I was never fated to anyone."
"Your father is a bitter man."
"My father's wolf has been dead for thirty years," Torin said. "He told me that too. He sat in his study at two in the morning and told me he has been a man in a wolf's chair since my mother left."
