Chapter 4: Market Day

I went back on Saturday, because of a necklace.

It was my mother's silver locket, and I had left it on the Luna's dresser the night I ran.

I had been in too much of a hurry to remember it until the old woman at the lake asked if I had anything of hers.

"Don't go alone," the old woman said.

"I'm not," said Bettina, and put on her yellow raincoat.

Market day in Cedar Hollow filled the square in front of the Council Hall with tents, crates of apples and children underfoot.

I had walked through it a hundred times in the Luna's green coat, and everyone had smiled at me.

Today the smiles stopped when I came around the fish stall.

Conversations died one tent at a time.

A woman I had once nursed through the flu looked at her shoes.

Then I saw the dais outside the Hall, where the Alpha's family stood on feast days.

Edmund was on it, in his charcoal overcoat.

Cecily stood beside him in a cream coat with the collar turned up.

At her throat, on a silver chain, hung my mother's locket.

I walked straight across the square.

Bettina matched my pace, muttering what she would do to a necklace thief.

"Isla!" Cecily said, and touched the locket, and her face went soft and worried. "I was just about to bring it to you. I found it on the dresser, and I didn't want it lost."

"Then you can give it to me here."

"Of course."

She reached behind her neck for the clasp.
