Chapter 12: The Heir Comes Home

Cassandra's POV

I was washing a mug in Joan's kitchen when the pack alert went off on all three of her screens at once.

It was not a bounty this time.

It was live video from the lobby cameras of the Stonehaven Tower, and the picture was jerking and full of smoke.

Redmaw wolves in half-shift were pouring through the shattered glass doors.

"They've breached the ground floor," Joan said quietly.

I put the mug down.

On the third screen, a man in a torn white shirt was fighting on the marble with his back against the reception desk.

He was holding three wolves off with his bare hands, and blood ran down one side of his face.

The silver ring on his hand was gray.

It was Corbin.

He was alone against a wall of teeth, and his own wolves were standing behind him with their arms hanging.

They were not obeying him.

They were waiting.

They were waiting for someone else, and I knew who.

"Cassie," Joan said. "You don't owe him this."

"I don't," I said.

I was already putting on my coat.

"This isn't for him. It's for them. It's my father's wolves, and the wolves who learned to read in my lab, and Vaughn. And it's for Dale Mercer."

Joan stared at me for a second.

Then she picked up her keys.
