Chapter 14: What the Elder Said
Corbin's POV
I woke with a tube in my arm and a stranger's ceiling above me.
The Tower infirmary smelled of antiseptic, and a sharp green scent I knew from Cassandra's lab.
My thigh was wrapped in thick white bandage from hip to knee.
The black lines were gone from my skin.
"You're awake," said the doctor at my bedside. "Good. Three more minutes and I'd have called your time."
"What saved me?" I asked.
The doctor held up an empty syringe.
It had a label in a neat, small hand, and the label read: Wolfsbane antidote, Lot 4, T. Greaves.
"She had it in her freezer," the doctor said. "She came down thirty-eight floors in under a minute with it in her fist. She put the needle in you herself."
I stared at the syringe.
"Where is she?"
"In the lobby, running your pack," the doctor said. "She hasn't been up here."
My throat closed.
I had called her cold for four years.
She had saved my life twice, and I had never once asked her for her side of it.
Vaughn came in a moment later and stood at the foot of the bed with his arms crossed.
"Redmaw pulled back to the Sanctuary road," he said. "Dale's hands are broken. Camille is in the holding room on the ground floor, and two guards are watching her."
"And Cassandra?"
"She told the Elders to come in from the Sanctuary." Vaughn's mouth twisted. "They landed an hour ago. The oldest one wants to see you."
The oldest Elder came in alone.
She was a small gray woman in a plain coat, and she had sat at my table at every pack feast for four years without once looking me in the eye.
