Chapter 6: The Anniversary Yacht

After the island I started erasing myself from his life.

I stopped mixing the calming serum for his wolf.

On the greenhouse terrace, I let the edelweiss he once gave me dry out until it crumbled in its pot.

Corbin ignored all of it for nineteen days, until the night he came in and tossed his tie on the couch.

His eyes went to the bare nightstand, and his brows drew together.

"My wolf has been wild for days. Where's my serum? And the flowers on the balcony, why haven't you watered them?"

I closed my lab notebook.

"The wolfsbane flared in my shoulder," I said. "My arm is too weak to carry anything."

At the word wolfsbane, guilt crossed his face.

He sat down on the edge of the bed, and his voice dropped to the soft tone I had waited four years to hear.

"Tomorrow is our fourth anniversary. I had Vaughn charter a yacht to Monaco. Let me take you out to sea so you can rest."

A yacht to Monaco.

Two days ago I would have wept over it.

Now I only counted: the bond would tear in less than forty-eight hours.

"All right," I said.

He smiled, relieved, and kissed my forehead.

His mouth stayed there a moment too long.

I let him, because it was one of the last times.

The yacht was white and enormous and waiting at the pier at noon.

I walked up the gangway in a plain linen dress with one small bag.
