Chapter 9: New Name, Seattle

Cassandra's POV

My plane touched down in Seattle at dawn, and Joan was standing at the arrivals curb with a paper cup in each hand.

"Your new name is active," she said, and gave me a cup. "Your new phone is in the glove box. And you look terrible."

"I haven't slept."

"You look like a truck ran you over, Cassie. Get in the car."

She drove me to a narrow gray house on a quiet hill.

It had a deadbolt on every door, and a cat on the porch that did not belong to either of us.

"Safehouse," Joan said. "Don't feed the cat. He'll follow you around."

I fed the cat.

It was raining.

I walked down to the Market that afternoon with my hood up.

The cold salt drizzle hit my face and woke me up better than any coffee.

There were no chemical smells from the pack lab here.

There were no battle alarms to listen for, and nobody at my back.

I sat down in a small seafood place with steam on the windows.

A waitress put a bowl of clam chowder in front of me.

I took a spoonful.

The warmth went down my throat and settled in my stomach.

The knot I had carried under my ribs for four years loosened one turn.

My wolf was weak and sore.

She was awake, though, and she wanted the fish.

I ordered the fish.

My new phone chimed in my pocket.

It was an email, forwarded through three servers, and Joan had flagged it with a red dot.

The subject line read: Cassandra, please just read this.
