Chapter 19: Fenmark's Price

Evander lay on the healer's cot with three ribs broken and his face grey, and he tried to get up when I came in.

"Don't," I said.

"They have your mother."

"I know what they have."

I pushed him down by the shoulder.

The healer wrapped his chest tight, and he hissed through his teeth.

"He knocked me off my feet with a lance," Evander said. "I never got near her."

"You ran at two hundred riders by yourself."

"Yes."

"That was stupid."

"Yes," he said. "I'd do it again."

I did not answer, because my throat had closed.

The Eastern King and the young King of the Marsh were waiting in the Great Hall when I came out.

They did not sit.

They stood side by side in front of the Alpha's chair, which was empty, and when I came through the doors, both of them bowed.

"Your Majesty," the Eastern King said. "We didn't know. On our lives, we didn't know what Fenmark meant to do."

"You swore the Moon restored."

"We swore it, and we meant it. The old King swore beside us."

"And he took my mother off my floor with two hundred riders."

The young King of the Marsh licked his lips.

"He's been hiding something for twenty-six years," he said. "Let me tell you."

"Tell me now."

"Fenmark rode with Kray the night the Moon Court burned." The young King's voice shook. "He led the second column. His father and mine were there. It was Fenmark's idea."

The Hall went very still.

"He wanted the Moon crown," the Eastern King said heavily. "But the Queen vanished in the fire, and he never found the circlet. He has hunted for it ever since."

"And that hall of his."

"The Iron Hall. He built it the year after the burning. A great ring of iron set in the floor around his throne, a full six paces wide." The Eastern King wet his lips. "No one has ever said why. I think he built it for her."
