Chapter 18: Repair
On the last morning of my thirty days, Fergus walked me out to the Ashcrest north line and handed me a thermos.
"Contract's up," he said. "You can renew it for a year, or the humming man gets his wards back."
"What do you want?"
"Both."
I laughed, and the coffee warmed my hands.
My shoulder had stiffened under its bandage, and Dacia's silver had left a pale burn across my collarbone that the healer-wolf said would fade by spring.
Fergus watched the wards hum along the north stones.
He took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"I'm taking the second half of my offer back," he said.
I turned.
"Not because you said no. You didn't say anything. I thought that was rather elegant."
"Then why?"
"Because you look south when you think I'm not watching," he said. "You've done it every day for a month, and you've never once looked anywhere else."
He said it without any bitterness at all.
