Chapter 31: Remarried in the Valley

We were married again on the first Saturday of November, in the long hall at the foot of the valley.

It had a new roof by then. The Lowell families had patched it in nine days.

Someone had hung the rafters with dried marigolds, and fifty lanterns burned in the windows.

Every bench in the hall was full.

Nine families sat on the left. On the right sat the tower wolves who had come over the hill, and the six who had once carried kerosene.

The older guard had his daughter on his knee. She had a ribbon in her hair the same green as my dress.

The Elder stood at the front on his stick.

"I have married a hundred and four couples," he said. "I have never married one twice."

"There's a first for everything," Joss said from the front bench.

The hall laughed.

The Elder frowned at him, and turned to me.

"Luna Lowell. The law says the Luna puts the ring on the Alpha. The ring is hers to give."

"I know the law," I said.

I took the ring out of my pocket.

It was not the one I had laid on his table.

This was my mother's band, thin and plain, from the cedar box in her wardrobe.

I turned to Torin.

He stood in a dark jacket with the cuff back on his wrist, and his hands were not quite steady.

"I said my vows to the room last time," I said. "I don't remember a word of them."

"I do," he said. "You said I do."

"I'll do better."

I took his left hand.

"Torin Kensington. I'm not wolfless. I never was."
