Chapter 15: My Heart Is Broken
I read the post standing in the hall outside the showcase, with Casper reading over my shoulder.
*My Heart Is Broken,* it began.
*Tonight my best friend of four years stood in front of the whole school and accused me of the worst thing I can imagine.*
*I paid a struggling girl's housing balance because I felt sorry for her. That is my whole crime.*
*I have a confession. I have been scared of Jessa for weeks. She sets up hidden cameras. She edits video. She decided who the villain was before she ever looked at the facts.*
There were four photos under the text.
Each was a still from Casper's clips, circled in red, with arrows pointing at tiny shadows.
*Look at the timestamps,* Saskia had written. *Look at the lighting jumps. These clips were cut and stitched. A video analyst I trust says they cannot be trusted.*
"What video analyst?" Casper said.
His voice was flat with anger.
"Those jumps are the night-vision auto-gain. Every camera does that. It's in the manual."
"Nobody reads the manual," I said.
By the time we reached the lobby the post had four hundred likes.
By the time we reached the dorm it had two thousand.
Under it the comments were turning.
*Wait, she paid her debt? That's so sweet.*
*Jessa has always been intense tbh.*
*Why would a best friend lie?*
*Video can be faked now. Just saying.*
Somebody had dug up my angriest reply from the first forum thread and set it beside Saskia's tear-stained photo.
