Chapter 24: Megan's Choice
I had my jeans on before Megan reached the bottom of the ladder.
The yard was a mess.
Leaves everywhere, shredded green, plastered to the gravel.
White hail still lay in drifts against the barn.
The hood of the farm truck looked like somebody had gone over it with a ball-peen hammer.
Up by the road, a big silver car sat in front of the farm stand.
Shane's mother stood beside it in pearls and a cream sweater, with her arms folded.
A tall gray man stood behind her with the car keys in his hand.
Megan's father.
A third man stood at the stand counter, waiting to be served.
It was ten to seven.
At seven the line starts, and it had already started.
The brothers in their truck, for coffee.
Two couples from the rental cottages, come to see the hail damage.
A woman from church with a pie order.
They all stood back by the chalkboard and watched.
Megan walked up to her mother in her muddy sneakers and her nursing-school hoodie.
"Hi, Mom."
"Get your things," her mother said. "You're coming home."
