Chapter 5: The Eighth Card

Two hundred people turned to look at my grandmother.

Gran sat very straight in the front row with her pocketbook on her knees.

I took the microphone back.

I just held out my hand, and Shane was so sure of himself that he gave it to me.

"Okay," I said. "Here's the bank."

Gran closed her eyes.

"Gran has a note at the bank, and she told nobody but him."

I pointed at Shane without looking at him.

"Because he's in real estate. And he'd know what to do."

A woman near the front said, "Oh, Bev."

"He knew what to do," I said. "He put a paper in front of a resort company with my name signed next to his. I found out last night, from a stranger in cabin three."

I pointed down the lawn.

Luke was standing by the corner of the barn in a dark suit, hands in his pockets.

Every head swung to look at him.

He didn't look away.

He didn't say anything, either.

"Yes, we owe the bank," I said. "That's our business. We'll pay it. But this man is never setting foot on Gran's land again."

Shane laughed.

"Libby, you can't even make payroll."

"Get off our farm."

"Make me."

He shouldn't have said that.

Not on Old Mission.

Not in front of these people.

The two brothers who farm the orchard to the north stood up from the eighth row.

They're both about sixty and built like refrigerators.

The man who plows our road all winter stood up behind them.

Then the guy from the hardware store, and three of the men from church.

Nobody said anything.

They just walked up the aisle in their good shoes and stood around Shane.

"Let's go, son," the older brother said.

Shane looked around for his groomsmen.

His groomsmen were looking at their own mothers.
