Chapter 17: Staff Only
On Friday the seventeenth of April, the day of Game 5, the building manager met me at the loading dock with an envelope.
Anders had driven me over at four o'clock, and he sat behind the wheel of his truck with the engine running.
The manager was a heavy gray man who had once signed my first paycheque.
He did not look at my face.
"Katja," he said. "I'm sorry. It's from upstairs."
I opened it.
It was a printed card with the team crest in the corner and one sentence under it.
This person is not permitted on Westmount Arena property, by order of ownership.
Under the sentence was a date, March 30, and the owner's initials.
"Two days after the clinch," I said.
"Brent sent his father a clip."
The manager rubbed his jaw.
"Conduct with players inside a team room. That's what it says."
He rubbed his jaw again.
"I was told to hand it to you in person, and to call security if you came inside."
