Chapter 23: Two Years

The lawyer's sedan pulled away from the curb, and Garnet had me against the front door before the taillights were gone.

"Tomorrow, ten o'clock, my kitchen," I had told the lawyer, and shut the door in his face.

The four of them stood in the dark front hall in their ruined good pants, wet to the knees.

I was backed against the oak with Garnet's mouth on my throat.

He kissed me hungrily, with the cold rain still on his skin.

His hand came up under my muddy sweater and found my breast.

"Garnet."

"I held you in a cemetery," he said into my neck. "I need to hold you somewhere warm."

"Then hold me."

He pulled my sweater over my head and dropped it on the floor, and my jeans followed, heavy with mud and water.

I stood in the hall in my underwear with my arms around his neck, and his hands slid under my backside and lifted me.

Abram reached past us and turned the lock on the front door.

Taras laughed softly in the dark.

"The stairs," I said. "Put me on the stairs."

Garnet carried me three steps and set me on the fourth, with my back against the cold wall.

The stairwell was narrow, and the old boards creaked under us.

Taras knelt on the step below, and Anders on the one above.
