Chapter 12: His Choice

Every head in the room turned toward the fireplace.

Virginia didn't move.

She set her champagne glass on the side table, very gently, so it didn't clink.

"Blair, darling," she said. "You're upset. Sit down."

"You gave it to me," Blair said again. She was crying for real now, mascara running. "You said it would help. You said nobody would ever look at the bottom."

"That's enough."

"You said Mitchell would never..."

"I said that's enough."

Virginia's voice cracked, and Blair shut her mouth.

The woman with the pearl choker put her glass down on the gift table.

Then she picked up her handbag and walked out the front door without a word.

Two more followed her.

Then five.

They went past me in the hall, not looking at anyone. Their heels clicked on the marble.

In three minutes the room was half empty.

Virginia rose from the velvet chair and leaned on her cane.

"Mitchell," she said. "We'll discuss this at home. Not in front of her."

He didn't look at his mother.

He was still holding the scan.

"Val," he said. "Can we talk? Outside. Please. Just us."

Nathan was standing at the end of the hall. He raised his eyebrows at me.

I nodded.

Mitchell and I went down the front steps and stood by the railing with the pink balloons knocking in the wind.
