Chapter 7: She Thinks We're Married

My advisor walked me back up the stairs with his hand under my elbow.

He was angrier than I was. His ears had gone red.

"I'll write a letter," he kept saying. "I'll put in writing that I supervised it. That's something."

"Thank you."

"It isn't enough. I know it isn't enough."

At the top of the stairs he stopped.

"Wait. Do you remember Shaw? Nathan Shaw? Tall, broken nose?"

Of course I remembered.

Nathan had been Mitchell's roommate for three years. He'd eaten half the food in our first apartment. He'd stood beside Mitchell on the beach at Gull Point and held the ring.

He and Mitchell started Northlight together.

Then three years ago he was just gone.

Mitchell said Nathan had sold client data to a competitor. He said the board voted him out and Nathan left town in disgrace.

"He's lecturing today," my advisor said. "Room 104. He comes back every fall to talk to the seniors."

I stood outside Room 104 for a whole minute before I opened the door.

The hall was half full. Students slouched in the tiers with laptops open.

At the front, a tall man in a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up was writing on the whiteboard.

Sandy hair. The crooked nose from a rugby game when he was twenty.

"...so the question is never how fast the system is," he was saying. "It's who it was built for."

He turned around.

He saw me in the doorway and the marker stopped moving.
