Chapter 14: Papa's Keys

"Lena," Annelise said. "It's Annelise."

The line went quiet.

We could hear the car idling, and the baby, and a woman's breath catching on an inhale.

"Oh God," Lena said.

"Tell them what, Lena?"

"I didn't. I thought it was him," Lena said.

"I know you did. Tell them what you thought he'd say."

Davin half rose from his chair.

Papa said "Sit" again, without turning his head, and Davin sat.

"That he's leaving you," Lena said. Her voice was thin and flat. "At Christmas. He said Christmas Eve, after his mother's. He said he'd already told you."

"I was never told."

"He said the marriage was over, Anni. He said you were."

"Sick," Annelise said. "He said I was sick."

"I'm sorry. I didn't."

"You brought me soup in March."

Lena began to cry, quietly, in her car, with the engine running.

"Whose baby is in that car seat?" Papa asked.

He had not spoken since the tape.

Everyone looked at him, and he looked at the phone.

"Lena Kuhn," he said. "I'm asking you. Whose boy?"
