Chapter 15: Terms Thrown Back

He did not say a word until the baby was asleep.

He carried her up, and changed her, and hummed to her through the door, and came down the stairs slowly with his coat still on.

I was standing in the kitchen with my back against the counter.

The light over the stove was the only one lit.

"The bag in the linen closet," he said.

"You saw it."

"Monday morning. Behind the towels. The passports, the folder, the card with your maiden name," he said.

"And you said nothing."

"You asked me not to ask you things," he said.

He took off his coat and hung it on the chair, very carefully.

"I zipped it back up. I made you toast."

"Jonas," I said.

"I booked a cabin that same day, so you would have somewhere to be with me when you left."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"I want to hear it from you," he said. "All of it. Not from a speaker."

So I told him.

I told him about the lawyer on the laptop and the date to file, and the chair at his mother's table I had planned to sit in.

I told him the terms.

"Until the fifteenth you could have my body," I said. "Nothing else. No I love you, no crying, no questions. I made rules for you in my head and I thought I was being smart."
