Chapter 9: The Overlook

Martha's POV

Annelise offered to babysit on Thursday night, and she wouldn't take no.

"I want to," she said at my front door, in her school-nurse cardigan, with her ponytail tucked under a knit hat.

"Go. Eat something with a tablecloth."

"She'll need a bottle at nine," I said.

"I've read the chart on your fridge. Twice."

She took the baby from my arms with a kind of hunger that I noticed and didn't name.

She held her carefully, against her shoulder, and shut her eyes for one second.

Then she looked at me and smiled, tired and brave.

"Go on," she said. "Have a nice night with your husband."

I almost told her.

I had the whole sentence in my mouth, and I swallowed it, because it was Thursday and Sunday was the plan.

Jonas took me to a German place in the Oregon District with white tablecloths and a candle in a jar.

He had shaved.

I hadn't known he owned the blue shirt, and I knew it was for me.

We ordered schnitzel, and he talked about nothing, as he does when he is nervous.

He told me about a boxcar that had come in from Montana with a live chicken in it.

The chicken was real.

I laughed out loud, despite myself, and the waitress looked over.
