Chapter 23: Nathan Again

"The position is general counsel," Nathan said, and held out the folder. "I've read the job description twice."

"We don't have a general counsel."

"You have a lawyer who lets people sign without reading. I thought you could use someone who doesn't."

I took the folder and walked into my office, and he followed.

I sat behind the desk, in the chair that had been Eleanor's, and I did not let myself look at him.

"I have terms," I said.

"I assumed."

"You answer to the board and to me, as an equal."

"You say no when you think no. You do not manage me, and you do not keep me."

"Agreed."

"You read every page. If I hand you a stack, you read all of it in front of me."

"I'd rather read it in front of you than sign it behind your back."

I pushed a one-page contract across the desk.

He sat down and read it, line by line, with his lips pressed together, while the clock ticked.

It took him four minutes, and I watched every one of them.

Then he signed it, and slid it back.

"That's done," he said. "What else do you have for me?"
