Chapter 11: What He Did Behind Her Back

Soren's POV

I had told her the truth about the gate, and I had meant every word.

It took everything I had to stand there while she chose.

When the rider said Cade was dying, I watched her face, and I knew before she spoke where she was going.

"I'm going back," Rhiannon said.

"Not for him."

"Not for him. For the people who stayed. They've been starved and lied to for a year, and now their Alpha is on his back and the woman who sold their food has run."

"Then I'm coming."

"I didn't ask you to."

"No," I said. "I'm asking to."

She looked at me for a moment and nodded once.

We rode out within the hour with twenty of my guards, and Gwen and Joss beside us.

She rode in front, straight-backed and silent, and I kept half a length behind.

There was something I had not told her.

I had not told her because I knew how it would sound.

Ten days before the feast, my border scouts had come to me with a report from the north.

A pack was starving at the Blackthorn line, and its own Alpha was nowhere near it.

I had asked whose pack.

I had known the answer before they said it.

I could not ride into Crescent Moon land and accuse another Alpha on a scout's word, under a treaty I was supposed to be keeping.

But I could send wagons.

So I had sent forty of them, loaded from the Lycan granaries, north along the old trade road.

I had stamped them with the Crescent Moon seal, because the men at the front believed in their Luna.

I had wanted the men at the front to eat, and to believe their Luna had not abandoned them.

The wagons would reach the lines in a few more days.
