Chapter 10: Boardroom

The boardroom on the forty-first floor had a table made from a single slab of walnut.

Eleven directors sat around it in suits that cost more than Hettie's car.

I walked down the long side of it, in an ivory gown and one shoe, and set the shoebox in front of Honoria.

"Roxie," Corbin said, and half rose.

"Sit down."

He sat.

Honoria looked at the box. Then at me, with a thin, perfect smile.

"This is a private meeting. You are trespassing."

"I'm the wife of your chief executive. Until the court says otherwise, I'm family."

"Security will remove you."

"Let them. I'll just read this out in the lobby."

I opened the lid and took out the first letter.

"October, seven years ago. To a booking agency."

My voice held. "It ends with a threat to any agency that books me."

A murmur went down the table.

I pulled out another. "Here's the second. And the third. Forty-one in all. Every agency in New York."

"These are fabrications," Honoria said.

"They're on your letterhead."

"Anyone can print letterhead."

"Then you'll want to see this one."

I laid the printed email flat on the walnut and slid it toward the director at the center.

He was a gray-haired man who had known Corbin's father.

He read it. He read it again.
