Chapter 22: The Cost
On Friday morning, the steps of Hallworth & Co. were crowded again.
I stood at the back of the press with Hettie's arm through mine.
On Sunday, in the dark of his borrowed car, I had told Corbin one thing about the call.
"It's yours to answer. Just don't answer it for me."
He had nodded and not said what he would do.
Now he came out through the glass doors in the same gray coat, with no one behind him.
The gray-haired director stood to the side, holding a folder.
"I'll be brief," Corbin said. The reporters laughed, because they remembered.
"The board has offered me my seat and my father's company. I'm declining both."
A sound went through the crowd, half gasp, half groan.
"Mr. Hallworth, why?" a man called.
"Because I'm not the right man for the job. I would run it the way my mother did, in a different suit."
The director beside him had been auditing the old office.
"Nine other women lost work to this house in the last decade. Their agencies were told the same thing, in the same words."
