The long strip of white tape was still on the floor of the casting room on Orchard Street.
Tobias had left it there on purpose.
Forty folding chairs stood on either side of it.
In the front row my aunt sat with her purse on her knees, daring anyone to say the wrong thing.
My cousin held the baby, who held a fistful of her own collar.
Hettie wore a new cardigan, cream-colored, with a pearl pin.
The green-coat girl from the open call sat near the back, because Tobias had invited her and she had cried for two days.
Corbin stood at the far end of the tape in a plain dark suit, with his father's ring back on his finger.
I had asked him to wear it, and told him why.
He had not asked me to explain.
I stood behind a curtain with my hand on the wall, listening to the cello.
"Turn," Tobias said.
I turned.
He walked around me with a pin cushion, touching nothing, looking at the dress.
It was ivory silk, cut for my body from the first line, with a high bodice and a train that swept the floor behind me.
"Nobody has touched the seams," he said. "I swear it on my mother."
