Chapter 16: Table for Two

Cade's POV

I got to the restaurant forty minutes early and sat in the truck with the engine off.

It was a narrow place on Water Street with six tables and a candle on each one.

The tablecloths were white, and I had ironed my own shirt for the first time since a funeral.

I had a sheet of paper in my inside pocket.

I had written it on Sunday, before any of it went wrong.

It said: One year. Her own room. Her own lock. Nothing she doesn't ask for.

It was every term I'd given her in the rain on the curb, set out neatly, and I meant to put it in her hand at dessert and let her cross out whatever she wanted.

It was the only way I knew to ask for her without asking.

At seven she came through the door in a dark blue dress.

She had on her boots and no jewelry except her grandmother's ring, and her hair was down.

Every man in the room looked up.

I stood so fast I knocked the chair.

"Hi," Willa said.

"Hi."

"You ironed your shirt."

"It took two tries."

She sat down across from me and smiled, and the candle moved in her eyes.

We ordered.

I did not taste any of it.

She asked what I did at her desk, every first Friday, for two years.

I had never been asked.

"I read the poster about heartworm," I said. "A dozen times. I could pass a test on it."

She laughed, with her whole face.

"You could have just said hello."
