Chapter 21: The President's Wife

On Monday night the clubhouse was full before seven.

Every bike was out front, and every chair was taken, and the old cannery floor smelled of beer and wet leather.

Cade had gone in ahead of me.

When I came through the door, forty heads turned, and I felt the room measure me.

"Sit by Ginny," he said quietly, from the head table. "It's a club matter."

"I'll stand."

"Willa."

"I'll stand," I said, "and I'll stay where I can see their faces."

The gray-bearded man tapped a gavel on the bar.

It was a wooden mallet someone had once used for crab, and the sound it made was ridiculous.

Nobody laughed.

"Bylaw nine," he said. "The president's wife is voted in by the club. It's been the rule since before Cade was patched. He did not bring it to a vote."

A murmur ran down the tables.

"I didn't," said Cade.

He stood.

"I told you she was my wife on Friday night and cut a man's patch in the same minute. I made a call for the club without asking the club."

He looked down the tables.

"You can have it as a charge."

"Cade," Ginny said.

"I'll hold the vote on myself, too. If you want a new president, I'll set the patch on the bar."

My stomach dropped.

He meant it.

He stood in his vest with his chin up, and he was already reaching for the leather at his shoulder.

"Don't," I said.

My voice carried farther than I'd meant.

Every head turned to me again.
