Chapter 31: Napkin and Signature
I asked him on Sunday, on the cottage porch, with a blanket over my knees and the sea going grey.
"Did you marry me because you were burying him?"
Cade stopped with a mug halfway to his mouth.
"What?"
"You were at a lake in Nevada with your brother's ashes. You walked into a chapel at midnight and said yes to a crying girl in a veil." I kept my voice level. "I've been thinking that maybe it was the grief that said it. And now you've got him back, and I'm just."
"Just what?"
"A napkin and a signature."
He put the mug down on the rail.
He did it so slowly that I knew he was angry, and I knew who with.
It wasn't me.
"Come here," he said.
"I'm fine where I am."
"Willa," he said.
"I'd like to hear it from over there."
He nodded and sat on the top step below my chair, with his back against the post.
He was lower than me and had to look up.
"I'll tell you what it was," he said. "Because I've never told it all the way, and you've earned it."
The wind lifted the corner of the blanket.
"I scattered Rory at dusk. I stood in the water to my knees. I said, I'm sorry, and I said, I should have been there, and then I had nothing left to say." His jaw worked. "I walked until midnight. I wasn't looking for anything. I wanted to be around people who didn't know me."
"The chapel."
"The only light on," he said. "I sat down in the back row. I wanted to be in a place where people said yes to each other, even if it was a joke."
"And I was crying."
"You were crying so hard you couldn't catch your breath. I thought, that's the loudest grief I've ever seen." He smiled, not at me. "I knew it was a different one than mine. It wasn't for the same person. But it was the same size."
