Chapter 32: The Grey Jackets
"I'm Willa Prescott," I said. "Which of my brothers-in-law did you want?"
The taller man smiled.
"Mr. Rory Donohue. We hear he's back from the dead."
"Who's we?" I said.
"Friends."
"Of Rory's?"
"Of an old debt," said the second one, and looked at his boots.
I did not like his quiet.
The shorter one was the kind who hits things for a living and has never needed to talk.
Behind me the side door of the garage banged open, and Cade came out wiping his hands on a rag.
He saw the jackets and he put himself between us in one movement.
"Willa. Inside."
"I brought your sandwich," I said.
"Inside."
"No," I said, quietly. "I'll stand."
He gave me a look, short and complicated.
Then he turned to the men and let the rag drop.
"This is a private garage," he said. "State your business."
"Mr. Donohue." The tall one nodded. "We're from the Iron Tide, up in Coos Bay. We've been told your brother Rory owes our club eighty thousand dollars."
"My brother's been dead five years."
"Then he'll have no trouble paying it," said the tall one. "A dead man doesn't spend much."
The back of my neck went cold.
Rory came around the corner from the diner with a paper bag and two coffees in a cardboard tray.
He saw the grey jackets and the tray tilted, and he caught it.
He walked straight up to them with a smile.
"Gentlemen," he said. "I think you want the Chamber of Commerce. They're on Water Street."
